About This Spot

Ristoro Mucciante unfolds like a gentle invitation to slow down and savor the raw simplicity of Abruzzo’s mountain life. Nestled in the serene heights of Castel del Monte, this is not just a restaurant, but a gathering place where the rhythm is measured in shared moments around open flames under the wide, sunlit sky.

At first glance, it’s a modest stretch of outdoor tables and standing grills that hum with quiet anticipation. The pace is unhurried, the air filled with the earthy scent of smoked meat and fresh alpine breezes. Here, diners become participants, selecting their own cuts of locally sourced lamb and pork, fresh breads, cheeses, and cured delights, then taking their place at one of the many grills to tend their own meal. It’s a tactile, communal experience that blends the joy of cooking with the beauty of the surrounding Gran Sasso landscape.

The setup encourages an honest connection—not only with the food, but with those around you, who are equally engaged in this hands-on ritual. The open-air environment brings a certain camaraderie and a welcome break from the usual restaurant formality. While the sun can be bold overhead, bringing a hat or parasol is a small trade-off for the views and the sense of being authentically embedded in this quiet corner of Italy’s highlands.

What makes Ristoro Mucciante linger in memory is this delicate fusion of taste, place, and personal touch. The thrill of grilling arrosticini or thick-cut castrato, the spontaneous conversation with neighbors at the table, the simple pleasure of pairing your meal with a glass of Montepulciano—these are the details that transform a meal into a meaningful moment.

For anyone exploring the Gran Sasso region, this is more than a stop—it’s a way to connect deeply with the traditions and the unpretentious warmth of an Abruzzo mountain afternoon.

This is a MUST TRY. One of the most unique and cool things I’ve done in my life. Simply take a ticket for meat and drinks. Drink a beer while waiting. When your number is called, order your meat and take it to the grills. Find an open grill and cook!

Super authentic place. You can buy meat, vegetables, cheese and other food and grill everything directly in front of the shop. A lot of tables available for customers. Be mindful of the fact that there is NO shadow at all and it can get quite hot - bring a hat or an umbrella

Amazing spot in Campo Imperatore! You buy local meats and grill them yourself on outdoor barbecues. One word: arrosticini. The views are stunning and the atmosphere is pure Abruzzo. It can get very sunny with little shade, so bring a hat or cover.

A must-do when you visit Abruzzo. We were told it is the best place to eat arrosticinis. And we were NOT disappointed. They currently cost 1€/pc which isn't bad even though the whole point of this place is to cook your own meat. They also have bread, wine, drinks, cheese, cured meat... etc. A water fountain to fill your bottle. We went beginning of September (at 1pm) and had to wait 30 min for our turn. Even though you have to wait a rather long time to get your food, they have a ticket system so you don't have to wait in line and can enjoy walking around. There was no line at 4.30pm. The employees were nice and most of them speak English. They provide glasses and plates. The toilets are ok. The line can be more or less long. We noticed that some people bring their own oil/bread/cutlery/insulated bags. The view is breathtaking and worth the long trip to make it to the top. An experience you should try!

If you are visiting the Gran Sasso, a stop at Ristoro Mucciante is a must. This place offers a truly unique experience: you can buy fresh local products such as meat, bread, cheese, cured meats, and drinks including wine, beer, and water. What makes it special is that they provide grills where you can cook the meat yourself, along with plenty of outdoor tables to enjoy your meal in the middle of nature. The atmosphere is rustic and authentic, perfect for those who want to combine good food with the beauty of the surrounding mountains. My advice is to go early, especially on weekends and holidays, because it gets very crowded and you might have to wait quite a while before being able to buy your products and start cooking.

Restaurant beautifully situated on the top of the mountains along the main road. Graveled large marking, also including motorhomes. Outdoor seating.

On a sunny and warm day there is no better place with crisp air and amazing setting the arrosticini are a must! Thank you Mucciante & Co

We made a trip here after watching the episode with Stanley Tucci. We got there by 11am and it wasn’t too busy. The food was excellent! We got the arostichini and sausage. The place was really busy when we left and there was a long line to get the food from inside. It was worth the drive and it has great views of the mountains.
